Milgi Coats on Tour 2017

dog blanket and sofa throw in navy fleece with navy floral designIt’s that time of year when we start dusting off the bunting and getting ready for the summer show season. If you’re looking for some great greyhound events this year, these are the ones we’ll be at. We’ll be bringing our own hounds with us, so if you’ve ever wanted to say "hello" to the supermodels on the website, you’ll get the chance to meet Jack and Dixie. We’ve reluctantly decided that this year, Sara will mostly be staying at home being hand fed sausages by her grand-hounds. She’s almost fourteen and although she’s in great shape, she finds the travelling and long days at shows a bit much now. It will be Jack’s first season of events – I’m really looking forward to seeing what he makes of it. He’s a super friendly boy who thrives on meeting new people and dogs.

If you’ve never been to one of these big events before, what can you expect? Usually, there’ll be a fabulous dog show with greyhound and sighthound specific classes. There’ll be plenty of trade stands selling everything for the well dressed hound. Most importantly, they are a brilliant way to meet up with other sighthound friends, have a relaxing picnic and enjoy the wonderful sight of a space filled with the most gorgeous hounds, all enjoying their retirement as they should.

For all these events, we’ll bring a selection of our stock, but are always happy to bring a specific item if you are interested in trying one before purchasing. We can take payments via cash, or card or PayPal (if you’ve got the app on your smartphone). Not all the venues have cash machines, and some of the smaller traders are cash only so it’s worth bringing some cash with you if you are thinking about shopping. Also useful to bring – folding chairs for the humans, picnic blanket or beds for the hounds, plenty of water and sun screen (though a brolly and wellies can also be handy!).

28th May 2017: Greyhound Extravaganza, Newmarket

This event is organised by a superb team of volunteers who do a great job. Take advantage of the online class booking in advance of the day – it really does save time. We find this event is usually blessed with terrific weather and it’s a nicely spaced day with plenty of room for gentle strolls, picnics and socialising with friends. If your dog finds a very crowded venue a bit too much, this is a much better bet than the GGG as the extra space makes it feel much more relaxed. Many of the greyhound charities in the south east will be having stalls as well as a great range of traders and I especially like that there is always an excellent veggie caterer in attendance as well as the usual carnivore food.

13th August 2017: Greyhound Walks Dog Show, Braintree, Essex

This is a very well put together event which was set up by the same team that are behind the Great Global Greyhound Walk so you know you’re in safe hands. There are four massive rings of classes and oodles of lovely stands. The show website already has the class list so you can plan your campaign. This show is held in a lovely country park in Braintree, so there’s plenty of space and ample parking.

19th August 2017: Greyhound Rescue Wales Summer Fayre, Hillcrest, Garnant, Carmarthenshire

We have a long association with Greyhound Rescue Wales, having adopted and fostered quite a few of our hounds over the years from them, and of course including Jack, our latest member of the family. This is a small and friendly event held at the rescue’s sanctuary with a nice range of classes and some lovely stalls plus good cake!

7th October 2017: Great Greyhound Gathering, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire

This will be the Gathering’s second year in its new permanent home at the Kennel Club building at Stoneleigh. Organised by the RGT HQ, this is one of the oldest and best established of the “big” greyhound events. Mostly indoors, so no need to worry about the weather and there’s plenty of parking on site along with open spaces nearby to let your hound stretch their legs. There will be the usual dog show classes, plus talks from a behaviourist on living with your greyhound and of course lots of traders. This event is traditionally held in September, and when I spoke to the Trust recently, they’ve confirmed it will be returning to September for future years. With it being held on the same weekend as Perry Barr, the Trust is hoping people will make a full weekend of it and enjoy both events as a lovely finale to the summer. We’re still not 100% certain if we can make this one as we need to finalise some of our logistics but we’ll definitely be at Perry Barr.

8th October 2017: Perry Barr RGT Annual Dog Show, Solihull Riding Club, Solihull

This is one of my favourite events of the year, and again is organised by a superb team of volunteers who make everything run like clockwork. It’s indoors, so not weather dependent, with plenty of parking. As well as four rings of amazing classes (two rings just for greyhounds!) you can expect wonderful trade stalls, nail clipping, Perry Barr’s own merchandise (including their awesome marmalade and fabulous cakes) and an all round great day out.

And of course I can’t mention events without talking about this year’s Great Global Greyhound Walk on 11th June. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of a global movement to celebrate our beautiful hounds and there are walks taking place all over the UK with more being added all the time. All of the walks are free of charge (though some will have collections or parking charges ) and many will be social events too with picnics and barbeques. Milgi Coats is proud to be a sponsor of the event and we’ll be walking with our own hounds on the day.

If you are an event organiser and would like us to attend your show or event, please do get in touch.
