Greyhound Extravaganza 2015

Dixie, our newest lurcher coat modelWe’ve got one of our biggest events of the year coming up shortly. On Sunday 24th May, we’ll be attending the Retired Greyhound Trust Greyhound Extravaganza at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. It’s a fantastic day out over the Bank Holiday weekend and has got a great deal going on. There’s an amazing dog show with masses of classes for greyhounds, other sighthounds (including galgos and lurchers) plus lots of all breed classes, and plenty of classes for children.

There will be a mouth-watering array of trade stalls – I’ve seen a brief list of who’s coming, and there will be every opportunity to shop for collars, coats, leads, accessories and all manner of goodies. A number of sighthound rescues from the south east will also have stalls so there’ll be plenty of information if you’re looking to add a new hound to the family.

The venue is lovely - beautifully grassy with plenty of room for a picnic though there are also catering stalls, including specialist vegetarian suppliers.

On top of all that excitement, there’s also the opportunity to meet the team from the Great British Greyhound Walk who will be having a stall, and you’ll even be able to meet Jack, the famous Hambassador. Plenty of opportunities for snuggles – who could resist?

Having attended before – my two top tips are:

  • Pre-enter the dog show on the RGT website – this is brilliantly simple and quick and will save a lot of time on the day. With four rings of classes, it’s such a big, busy event, this is worth considering.
  • Use our Reserve and Collect service for hassle-free shopping. Simply let us know before the show what coat you’d like and we’ll make sure we bring it. Stroll along, pay and collect.

As usual, we’ll be able to accept payment via debit card, credit card, Amex and even PayPal (if you have the app on your smartphone) as well as good old fashioned cash. There’s no cash machine on site so bear in mind that many of the smaller traders won’t be taking cards.

We’ll be bringing along Callie, one of our greyhounds plus Dixie, the newest member of the family – a small and adorable black lurcher. The girls have already entered their classes and are looking forward to meeting their friends and enjoying a great day out. The last time we attended in 2013, we were next to the ice cream van, so Callie was in heaven. If you’ve seen their pictures on the website, and ever wanted to meet them, please do come along and say hello. Dixie hasn’t been on the website yet, but she has (not surprisingly) got some gorgeous new coats and we’ll be sharing some pics of her very soon. We adopted her through the wonderful Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue – an excellent rescue with a great track record of finding homes, especially for lurchers.

Like its big sister, the Greyhound Gathering at Nottingham Racecourse, this day is run by the RGT and is always very well organised and attracts people from a huge geographical area. There’s something quite magical about attending this sort of event and seeing a venue absolutely filled with greyhounds as far as the eye can see – usually reclining elegantly if they are not in the ring.
