Everything you need for your summer holiday

greyhound lurcher whippet raincoat in emerald green ripstopSummer holiday time is almost here! We’ve pulled together some useful information and links to make your holiday with your hound run smoothly.

Before you go – did you know you could pre-register your dog on the DogLost website? This is a brilliant idea, as your dog is vulnerable to escaping or getting lost if you are staying somewhere new. Doing this in advance, you can find some decent pics and do their write up in your own time. Once it’s uploaded, it can then be quickly activated if your dog goes missing or is stolen, and the whole DogLost network will swing into action. DogLost have an excellent record in helping to reunite lost dogs and their owners quickly. To use this fantastic service, go to the DogLost website

Make sure your pet’s microchip details are up to date with the correct phone number, and ensure their collar tag has your mobile number on it.

Dogs on leads are welcome at many Cadw properties if you are visiting Wales, and are also welcome at many National Trust properties, in the gardens and grounds.

If you’re staying on the coast, check out the local Council website to find up to date information on beach dog bans, Dog Control Orders, and similar information. It’s also useful to keep an eye on the Council’s Twitter feed or FB page – for info on events, local stories and any changes to services. Make sure you’ve got reliable information about tides, currents, and rockfalls.

One of our favourite blogs is Camping and Exploring with Dogs – Cat Greyhound writes all about her adventures and gives reviews of the various campsites, cafes, restaurants and visitor attractions they have visited.

Another useful website – the Good Dog Guide. Lots of info on accommodation, visitor attractions and suppliers.

The summer event and show season is in full swing – if you’re going away, look up any greyhound rescues where you are staying, and see if they have any events on while you are away. One of the wonderful things about pointy dogs is that they bring people together.  A fun dog show, greyhound walk, picnic or summer fair is a low-cost, fun way of spending a day with the whole family, and will usually be a fundraiser for a worthwhile rescue.

You can find information on the very worthwhile Don’t Cook Your Dog campaign here, including how to get a free sticker for your car.

Make sure your hound has everything they need – we can supply you with fleece coats (ideal for nights under canvas or cooler late summer nights), raincoats for the inevitable wet days, and bandanas when your hound wants to look super stylish.  We have excellent stocks of all these items in the most popular sizes, and you can always contact us to check availability before ordering if you are in a rush.  We can even post items to your holiday accommodation.

Finally, don’t forget to take lots of  pictures of your hound in their Milgi kit. We’ll be running our annual photo dog show in January and the summer is a great opportunity to build up your portfolio!
